Boiler replacement project delivers £7,000 energy savings in six months for charity
High efficiency replacement condensing boilers installed by PHD Mechanical at Aspire Leisure Centre in Stanmore, Middlesex, have delivered energy savings of £7,000 in just six months to Aspire, the spinal injuries charity.
Aspire Leisure Centre is Europe’s first fully-integrated training centre for both disabled and non-disabled people, located in the grounds of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, Middlesex.
The Challenge
PHD Mechanical were contracted to replace the nine ageing boilers in the pool side plant room of the leisure centre that serve both the 25-metre swimming pool and shower facilities and provide underfloor heating. Reliability was a primary consideration due to the need to maintain the water temperature in the swimming pool at a constant 31⁰C at all times for the benefit and safety of the users. The heating and hot water services were also required to be maintained throughout the installation.
The Solution
PHD Mechanical Ltd recommended replacing the nine failing boilers with seven Quinta Pro 115kW boilers in cascade to provide greater reliability and accurate matching of heat output demand for energy savings.
The first step was to remove the failing boilers and rearrange the remaining functional equipment into one bank to create space for the installation of the first of the Quinta Pro boilers. The next step involved removing the remaining ageing boilers to complete the installation of the Quinta Pro cascade. New flueing was then positioned along the exterior of the building. Finally, upgraded controls and a new building energy management system were added for optimal efficiency of operation and improved future management, control and monitoring of the boilers by PHD Mechanical
